UN Voices Alarm Over Israeli Airspace Violations, Clashes in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Nations has expressed concern over escalating tensions in Lebanon, calling for restraint amid reports of continued Israeli military activity and repeated airspace violations despite a recently announced ceasefire.

According to reports, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said on Monday that peacekeepers in Lebanon had documented extensive Israeli operations in southern areas, alongside renewed violence following strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs and reported attacks from Hezbollah into northern Israel.

“We are alarmed by the overnight escalation, including renewed strikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut yesterday and reported Hezbollah strikes into northern Israel,” Haq said at a press briefing.

He urged all parties to avoid further escalation and adhere strictly to the ceasefire agreement announced last week by Lebanon, Israel, and the United States.

“We urge all actors to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action that could further inflame an already volatile situation,” he said, adding that diplomatic efforts toward a more durable peace should not be undermined.

Haq also stressed the importance of protecting civilians and infrastructure, reiterating that international humanitarian law must be respected by all sides.

“Civilians and civilian infrastructures must not be targeted. We call on all actors to uphold their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.”
