US Embassy in Beirut states deployment of LAF in Lebanon is critical for stability

(MENAFN) The United States emphasized on Tuesday that increasing the presence of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in southern Lebanon represents a vital step toward reinforcing stability in the country.

In a statement shared on social media, the US Embassy in Beirut said, “The Lebanese Army’s expanded presence in the south and ongoing efforts to restore state sovereignty across the country represent critical steps forward for Lebanon’s stability.”

The statement noted that US Ambassador to Lebanon met with Lebanon’s Defense Minister to discuss the LAF’s central role as the nation’s primary guarantor of security. Separately, the ambassador also held talks with Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport to address plans for rehabilitating and modernizing the country’s transportation infrastructure. The discussions further covered prospects for transparent, government-led reconstruction initiatives in the southern regions.

Lebanon’s president had previously indicated plans to increase troop deployment in the south to 10,000 by the end of the year as part of a ceasefire arrangement with Israel. However, ongoing Israeli military actions have reportedly hindered the completion of this deployment.

A ceasefire has been in place since November 2024, following more than a year of hostilities that left over 4,000 dead and 17,000 wounded amid the Israeli conflict in Gaza. While Israeli forces were expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon in January, they have instead maintained a partial presence at five border outposts.
