U.S. Embassy in Beirut Announces Indefinite Closure

(MENAFN) The US Embassy in Beirut announced Tuesday it was closing its doors indefinitely, citing spiraling regional instability as fighting between American-Israeli forces and Iran continues to reverberate across the Middle East.

"All other regular and emergency consular appointments have been cancelled. We will communicate when the Embassy returns to normal operations," the Embassy said in a post on X, the US social media platform.

The closure comes as Lebanon absorbs a fresh wave of violence — Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 52 people and wounded more than 150 others across the country since Monday alone.

The broader regional crisis was ignited Saturday when US and Israeli forces launched sweeping, large-scale strikes against Iran, killing nearly 800 people in an offensive that claimed the life of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with numerous senior officials.

Tehran has since mounted an aggressive retaliatory campaign, directing drone and missile strikes against Israel and Gulf states that host US military infrastructure — dramatically widening the scope of the conflict and raising alarm across regional capitals.

The Embassy's indefinite shutdown signals a significant deterioration in on-the-ground security assessments, as Washington braces for further Iranian-linked fallout across a region now gripped by its most severe military crisis in years.
