Mortar Strike on Southern Lebanon Kills UN Peacekeeper
UNIFIL said the fatal attack occurred late Wednesday when mortar rounds hit an outpost near Marjayoun, in southeastern Lebanon. The stricken peacekeeper was airlifted to a hospital in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, where medical teams were ultimately unable to save his life.
Two additional members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon suffered injuries in the same strike and are currently receiving care at a medical facility within a UNIFIL base, the mission confirmed.
The force has opened a formal investigation "to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident," according to the statement issued by the mission.
Thursday's announcement came with a stark warning from the peacekeeping body, which flagged a disturbing surge in projectile activity across the region. "UNIFIL has detected an increasingly high number of trajectories and impacts in South Lebanon. The violence must end," the mission said.
The killing marks a grave escalation in danger for international personnel stationed in one of the world's most closely monitored conflict zones, as calls mount for an immediate halt to hostilities threatening both civilian and peacekeeping lives.
